I think, technically, these are referred to in the canon as "Lightfoils" [link]

Very cool looking.

Not necessarily; the major difference between a Lightsaber and a Lightfoil is their creation and usage; Sabers are made with the Force, and require the force to be used properly. Lightfoils are popular because they also don't require a connection to the force or force training to be used effectively, where if a non force sensitive were to pick up a saber, they would be more likely to cut off their own limbs than hurt their opponent.

True, though since all the weight in a foil, or rapier, is all in the hilt it would be a lot easier to fence with a lightsaber in general. The problem would arise in that most lightsabers are not designed to facilitate this kind of combat and a person trying to fence with one leaves his hand and forearm more exposed. In practice I don't think one would need the force to wield a light rapier any more than a light foil, as it is the style - not the type of saber - that makes lightsaber combat so dangerous to a non force wielder. (fencing styles always keep the blade further away and pointed toward your foe, whereas the flashier style used in the films relies on larger moves with more opportunity to mess up and hit yourself; especially since most other sword fighting forms involve the use of swords with their weights distributing differently - so knowing how to fight with a longsword would be useless when wielding a lightsaber.)

May I point out that you just attempted to apply logic to a weapon which works on one of the following methods (depending on your source); A beam of light that curves back on itself, or Plasma which has both itself and its heat contained by magnetic fields?

Yes, I'm aware I did not give you a choice. Still; like I said, Lightsabers require the Force to use, Light Foils do not. Logical? No. Sense making? No. Canon? Yes.
